22nd Biennial Conference of the International Society for the Study of Early Medieval England

“Communities”

2–4 July 2025

“Communities” was the theme of the 22nd biennial ISSEME conference, taking place in Düsseldorf from 2nd–4th July, 2025. The conference was hosted by Heinrich-Heine-Universität’s Medieval English department at the Haus der Universität, in the city centre, with some events taking place on campus. It was also possible to attend online. Refreshments and lunches were provided by the medieval English department of HHU. A wine reception on 2nd July was provided by ISSEME.

Keynotes were delivered by Prof. Rory Naismith (University of Cambridge) and Prof. Susan Irvine (University College, London). The inaugural Roberta Frank lecture was delivered by Dr Colleen Curran (University of Galway).

The pre-conference workshop was led by Prof. Seeta Chaganti (UC Davis). It took place on the university campus on 30th June and 1st July and focused on what antiracist medievalist practice could look like.

You can no longer register for the conference as the registration deadline was 15th of June.

Rates for the conference were:

  • In person, full: $120
  • In person, reduced: $60
  • Online, full: $60
  • Online, reduced: $30

All participants at the conference (online or in person) must also have a current ISSEME membership.

If you are facing financial hardship and cannot afford to pay either the conference registration fee or the membership fee then please email Elise Louviot (ISSEME Executive Director) at elise.louviot@univ-reims.fr  to request a fee waiver.

If you are eligible for the concessionary registration but can afford to pay the standard fee, please consider doing so as fees are paid direct to ISSEME and will support its work, including the pre-conference workshop and the provision of support to workshop participants.
